“I felt the Holy Spirit leave me!”

I felt the Holy Spirit leave me when I started vaping again. Did I fall from grace? What is “the free gift of righteousness”? Is our righteousness only imputed or also imparted? What’s the difference? If we are not actually righteous, how would we ever get righteous in the future? How do we know if we are born of the Spirit? When does that happen? Is it related to water baptism?
