“Only forgiven of past sins? Keep short accounts with God now?”

I misrepresented my motives for marriage years ago. Am I forgiven by God for the sin of dishonesty? How do we convince others of the finished work of Christ? What about 1 John 1:9? Who is it written to? How can we know for sure?
