Do we “help” God? Do we have to “put Him first”? If so, how?

Why did Jesus tell people to “be perfect” when He knew we couldn’t? What does it mean to have a new heart? A new spirit? What about our minds? Are they new or being renewed? I tell my friends that I don’t have to help Jesus, and they look at me strangely. Am I right?
